Requirements

It is essential that you read all required material for each week and
come to class prepared, take notes, and participate in discussions in-class
and on the weblog.
readings marked by this sign require a response of 450-500 words. If there
is more than one marked reading per week then the required total is still
no more
than 450-500 words for all readings together.
By
taking this class you agree to making a commitment to abide by the following
guidelines:
We will listen carefully and respectfully to each other.
We will respect and value differences of belief, ethnicity, race, religion,
ideology, sexual orientation, class background, region, artistic expression,
and experience. We will work together to solve problems and conflicts.

Serve as co-facilitator for two classes: this means helping to lead class
discussion, and posting your preparatory notes for the class session to
your weblog before the class presentation (15% of grade
for each of the two class sessions)

Write and post responses to (all 24 marked) readings on your personal
weblog (30% of grade)
|_|_|
Thoughtful participation in-class (20% of grade)
|_|_|
Thoughtful participation on discussion weblog --at least once
every 2 weeks (20% of grade)
Late
assignments:
Late assignments are not accepted without doctor’s note
or evidence of an emergency, by prior arrangement with me on emergency
grounds (if you are having a personal emergency, email me asap). Incompletes
for the course will not be given except in cases of evidence of personal
hardship/ illness discussed in advance.
Attendance:
Attend
all classes, on time. Attendance is taken each class. If you are sick
or have an emergency, call me before class.
More than 2 unexcused absences will result
in the grade F.
Two late arrivals equal one absence.
Grading:
You will
receive 5 grades in this class that will result in the
final grade as described above. Two grades for your presentations, one
grade for all responses to readings, one for in-class participation, one
for contributions to the discussion weblog.
A
Original thinking, moves beyond assignment bounds, thinks creatively
and documents this in the responses to the readings, Writing: Excellent
writing and grammar skills. Expresses ideas clearly and effectively; spends
time on the work; attention to detail. Engagement and Participation: Thoughtful
comments about readings. Participates fully, taking leadership role in
discussion in class and on the discussion weblog. Brings new ideas to
class consistently. Listens to other’s views attentively and with
respect. Attends class on time and turns in work on time.
B Completes assignments with some originality; Satisfies
aims of the assignment well. Writing: Good writing and grammar skills.
Writing is clear and ideas are organized. Engagement and Participation:
Participates fully in discussion. Attends class on time and turns in work
on time. Participates in online comments and engages with others’
ideas.
C Unoriginal or common sense thinking; doing only what
is required; Writing: Unclear writing, grammatical errors, lack of thoroughness,
does not meet goals of exercise, structural and technical problems. Engagement
and Participation: Inconsistencies in presentation of work and participation,
or does not frequently participate. Attends class but minimally engages
with others’ work.
D Falls below expectations in most areas. Inconsistencies,
sloppiness, inaccuracies, errors, lack of effort.
F Fails to meet requirements, assignments not turned
in on time
